Greatest finish ever / beste finish ooit

OK, I admit, I am a big fan. So I apologize if I express myself too lyrical about this footage. But this is, for me, the best race and finish ever. The Great North Run 2013 in Newcastle, one of the best semi marathons in the world starring three legendary runners. Haile Gebreselassie, Kenenisa Bekele and Mo Farah. To have these three extraordinary runners in one race is a rare treat. I remember watching the race on tv (thanks BBC for broadcasting this race live!). This is running at its best. If you are impatient please start watching this video from 7:00. It's the moment where Bekele decides to attack. Gebreselassie tries to resist and pushes to stay with Farah and Bekele. Watch Bekele creating a gap between himself and Farah and enjoy the incredible finish. What a race! To give you an idea of their performance and astonishing speed. Bekele finishes this race in 1 hour and 9 seconds, That is 4:35 per mile! 2:51 per km. Watch and enjoy and afterwards take a bike and try to ride at the same speed (21 km/h). Watching this motivates me and at the same time it makes me a very humble runner.

The Great North Run in Newcastle in 2013.

Everything starts with ambition / Alles start met ambitie

After a few indecisive weeks I cut the knot. It was about time too. The entrance fee was getting more expensive and the number of bibs was dropping fast. And of course Kenenisa Bekele played his part too. A press release told the world he was going to make his first appearance in a marathon. Well, that's something not to miss. Ok, I won't bump into him during the race, no chance. But I'd like to be able to say that I was there when he broke the world record. The world record now in possession of Wilson Kipsang (an incredible 2:03:23). You never know what Bekele is capable of. He isn't participating to finish second that's for sure.

So today is day 1 of my training schedule. I've got 12 weeks or 82 days to go. I'll have to very prudent, my right foot isn't exactly quite ok. I'll have to considere pausing my preparation or even breaking it of all together. But let's not be pessimistic. It least I want to try. It will be my 13th marathon. My last two races were also the fastest ones (Paris 2013 and Eindhoven 2013). So why not have another go at trying to run a personal best? One day this will not be possible any loner. But for now: citius, altius, fortius.

Cross country race Stabroek / Veldloop in Stabroek

This year I'm competing in the KAVVV cross country challenge. Six races (Wommelgem, Schoten, Stabroek, Burcht, Kalmthout and Zandhoven) in the province of Antwerp. It's a great way to make it through winter and completely different from the road races I'm used to. Sometimes it's a fast course on leafy paths in a park, another you have to slosh through the mud in a meadow.

For each entry you collect points and you try to achieve the best possible score in the final result after six races. You can compete in every six races but only the five best results count. That way you can actually miss a race if need be. It's great fun if you're a bit competitive.

This weekend I participated in the third cross country in Stabroek, Antwerp. The course was measured out in a meadow (cow droppings included). We had to run 4 laps of approximately 1500 meters. Since I'm 41 years old I'm competing in the masters category. Runners don't actually start together. The oldest athlete (e.g. 75 years old) gets a bonus and is allowed to start first. Next is 74 etcetera. So by the time I finally get to the start all these older runners got a head start. In my category (40 - 49) there's a gap of 5 seconds for every year. Saturday I started last together with three other 41-year-olds. So it's a race where try to overtake as many runners as possible.

It was a tough race. Lots of rain and mud, not a fast course at all. I had to toil, heavy panting and all. My first to cross country races were better for certain. My foot still hurt. that's what you get when running with spikes. But it was great fun competing out there. I ended up 12th of 26 participants (that is in my category). And for now I rank sixth out of 43 after three races.

Uitslag hier

Long run and three birds / Lange duurloop en drie vogels

I'm running again. Tried my new insoles for the first time. Too early to tell yet. My foot still hurts, but I hope it will gradually improve. Went for a long run along the river Rupel. Grey and misty today. Saw three birds. Great fun to see the woodpecker.

We lopen alweer.

How good is good? / Hoe goed is goed?

Every runner must have been wondering about his or her result after the race. Your name appears in the official results, maybe you even ran a personal best. But how can we evaluate our performance? How fast were you really? To give you an idea I will show some charts I've been using for years to evaluate my race times. I didn't come up with these race-time ranges myself. All credit goes to Bob Glover and Pete Schuder, authors of the runner's handbook 'The New Competitive Runner's Handbook'.

They present charts for both men and women, divided into different age categories. Have a look and see how you perform in your age category. Don't be discouraged though. A runner always needs a goal. I certainly works for me.

10 km race in Mol, Belgium

10 km race in Mol, Belgium

On the second November I ran a 10 k race with some Team Haraka teammates. I had absolutely no ambitions whatsoever. OK, except perhaps being the first one to arrive in our team. So I started of with a very different mind set from all other races I ran this year.  Just for fun. That's me on the left (240)

Great weather for a run. Lots of oxygen, some drizzle. Running very comfortably, not hurting myself at all. 4 laps of 2,5 km.

Goed weer om te lopen. Veel zuurstof, af en toe wat miezeren. Comfortabel lopen, zonder mezelf pijn te doen. 4 rondjes van 2,5 km

Running pictures seldom flatter

Loopfoto's zijn zelden flatterend

I finished in 43:33. And although I set out to do an easy race, minutes after finishing I regretted not giving it all. Nevertheless it was necessary to take it easy. After all it's been a good year.

Visit to Funesco / Bezoek aan Funesco

For a while a sour right foot is troubling me. I have this nagging pain beneath my footpad, near my heel. I think it may be fasciitis plantaris. Since mid-June I did the preparation for the marathon Eindhoven without my worn out insoles. The discomfort was limited to a minimum. Nevertheless getting out of bed and the very first steps of the day were always painful. But after some walking around the pain always disappeared. And during my training sessions I never had any trouble..
Now  however, a few weeks after the marathon and in recovery period, the pain keeps increasing. A bit strange as I do significantly less mileage. After a field race on spikes the injury worsened dramatically. Hence the decision to use insoles again. It was +Sonja Kerremans who advised me to go and visit Funesco in Melsele ( www.funesco.be ), specialized in orthopedic shoe technology.

I was kindly received and after an introductory conversation several footscans were taken, both static and dynamic. From the collected images it was very clear that the exterior of my feet doesn't touch the ground while walking or running. This means the inside part of my feet have to compensate rather heavely. This is clearly the case for my right foot. Not only the static and active images of tonight but also the wear of running shoes is proof to this conclusion.

I was extremely pleased with the reception, the friendly approach and professional explanations I got from +Michel Bejstrup. I have to wait a few days and my new insoles will be ready on the 16th November. Hopefully they will do the trick. I'm looking forward to injury free training sessions in the near future.
